The post is to provide lab management and research support for Professor Alison Smith's research group, one of approximately 20 groups in the Department of Plant Sciences. The group currently comprises 5 post-doctoral research associates, 8 PhD students and several interns and visitors. Professor Smith's research is focused on algal molecular biology and biochemistry, and is funded by grants from Research Councils, charities and the EU. As well as individual projects, the group is responsible for a plant metabolite analytical facility (with HPLC, GCs and GC/MS equipment) and the Algal Innovation Centre (AIC), a facility in the nearby Botanic Garden that allows scale up of algal cultures under natural conditions. Work in the AIC is frequently in collaboration with industry.

The role-holder will be responsible for managing the laboratory and the AIC, taking a lead in safety aspects of research, facilitating use and maintenance of equipment, and training new members of the laboratory, as well as being responsible for ordering, monitoring and cataloguing of stocks, and ensuring maintenance of crucial algal and bacterial stocks. They will have the opportunity to support one or more members of the group in their research projects, and depending on background experience and interests, may have their own individual project to pursue, such as development or modification of analytical protocols. There is also the requirement to liaise with other technical and research staff in the Department and the wider University, particularly over safety or disposal of waste.

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available until 30 September 2021 in the first instance.

Deadline 28th August 2018

Many thanks
