Barry I totally concur. There is - as I said - and always will be (the Bhagvad Gita) the field of battle, and our individual actions on that field.

I think the point about my linking the inertia caused by usage is linked to Boris' recent point about Bucky Fuller's reference to trimtrab. Degree of usage IS a trimtrab. The powers that be operate at the level of the rudder. So their efforts are directed at ways of working on the dynamics of the rudder itself. And, the rudder will always be the rudder, and the trimtrab the trimtrab. Each of the mass of individuals is working at the level of their own trimbrab. Whether they know it or not doesn't really matter.

Roger,
Can't resist one further point. You said:

the fact is that we have reached the point where the constituent components of these vested interests (political parties, companies, quangoes and other bodies....) cannot serve the vested interests by decreasing usage.

While I believe this is largely true (at least I hope it is true!), there will certainly be times when particular powerful interests will want to decrease usage in some fashion, probably by freezing out "troublemakers" of some sort. And the WikiLeaks episode suggests that it will be easy for them to do so.
