Nope... sorry Russell, but war does not stop it: it accelerates it!

      Stefan,

What we can say about STATE DEBT is one thing for SURE: it is SOVEREIGN DEBT and there is nothing on Earth that can guarantee its repayment. Scary thought,

The US SUPREME COURT even says that Debt of the State of California, for instance, is also SOVEREIGN. How about that?

            What precisely IS debt?

You know what our paper currency has as its sub-heading? I quote:

Under the title 'The Bank of England", UK notes contain the following words:

"I promise to pay the bearer on demand the sum of.....{five, ten, twenty, fifty] pounds"

Russell - cash IS debt. We are never actually paid the sum (as bearers). We are simply acknowledged as being legitimate creditors of the Bank of England to the tune of..........

I simply cannot understand these debates concerning debt, which appear to assume there is some sort of cash transaction that exists without debt. Cash IS debt. Cash is promisary, not real.

Or, guys, have I got this wrong???

The most effective action students could take is simply refuse to to go uni for a year. That would put the wind up all those that make their money from "education"!

Even when students protest/riot they are complicit in the fraud that you have to go to uni for practically any job you wish to get.

Have a Happy New Year and I hope that you weren't in the flood area but I think you weren't cos you live down South, if I recall.

UK students may be revolting, but US students just 'take another shift'?

What has happened to the 60s and Kent State etc?

But hopefully a mail order catalogue approach would reach non-computer users and encourage stable (delivery) infrastructure. Obviously great care might be needed in preparing these and an online approach might be helpful- a wiki?- but also ngos might find a decrease in waste if they lent their expertise. Contraception, abortion and weapons would be hot button issues, for example, in many countries. Illustrations and diagrams would help non-readers. Stewart Brand's view would be welcome. I can't say I've researched this to any depth and for all I know someone is doing something like this already.

I should add I was really impressed by Thomas Friedman. He states what many of us felt and it came out in 2007- but in all honesty I can't accept America is unprepared- of course there may be unintended consequences and students competing internationally for jobs may seem one to some. We're slowly becoming world citizens.

                    Yes Nick,

Stewart established the Whole Earth Catalogue - the platform for the counter-culture of the sixties and seventies. He is also involved in the current controversy about conventional and alternative sources of energy. He was in a recent televised debate when he was lambasted for apparently having shifted towards an acceptance that nuclear power generation has to be an intrinsic part of any solution, wehereas he has been understood up to now as anti-nuclear.

I'm sure this supports the view that all you need is the relevant evolving vsm-ified mail order catalogue to support, liberate, people.

                      Does anyone know Stewart Brand?
