I am very interested in this as one of my PhD students is looking at the general topic of Emergence and how nature organises it self bottom - up
What you need are agents with simple rules but lots of them communicating.( eg ants, bees ) You then get self regulation. I think this is what Stafford and Gordon were after ( before their time as usual)
I just wondered if anyone had any good modern links to this type of work
