Critical Appraisal Skills




The aim of this course is to provide a thorough introduction to critical appraisal.  The course will include a series of presentations on various aspects of critical appraisal with time available for practical application in small groups.


The following topics will be covered during the day.


Introduction to critical appraisal

§                                             What is critical appraisal, and what does it aim to achieve?

§                                             Why do we need to know how to do critical appraisal?

Trainer Profile – Mr. Alain Besson


We are delighted to confirm Mr. Alain Besson as the Course Leader.  Alain has more than 20 years experience of working in medical libraries, mostly in the medical schools at St Bartholomew’s Hospital and the Royal London Hospital.  His current position is manager of academic services at Queen Mary, University of London.  Alain gained his library qualification from University College London, and he holds a PhD from the University of London.  He is accredited by CASP, the leading teaching and learning organisation for critical appraisal in evidence-based practice.


At the end of the course, you should be able to:


·         Explain what critical appraisal is, what it aims to achieve and why we need to know how to do it

·         Learn from examples of published critical appraisal     

·         Use critical appraisal checklists

·         Teach and facilitate critical appraisal

·         Test the validity of major research methodologies, especially systematic reviews, meta-analyses, randomised controlled trials and qualitative studies

·         Interpret the results of a study

·         Make sense of Forest plots
