Dear all

We have sent out a formal announcement of the Metaphorum, 2008 event.

This has gone to the Metaphorum community –through individual emails-  and  is posted on the Metaphorum website [URL].

This is a more informal 'announcement' of the event.  One which we hope you will all note and feel free to share with like-minded people.

Over the years, it has become apparent that what Stafford referred to as 'viability'  is very close to what we currently call 'sustainability'.

In the 2008 event, proposed to be held in the beautiful area of Ostersund in central Sweden, we want to explore this similarity further:

·         Is it the case that the language of Stafford - and indeed of others in the cybernetic tradition such as Gregory Bateson - deeply resonate with the issues and mood of sustainability?

·         And if so, in what ways?

·         In which ways might practitioners and thinkers benefit from the studies in cybernetic thinking?

·         Are we aware of particular methodologies and applications of organisational and second order cybernetics in sustainability programs or agencies?

That is the focus of this year's event....... How cybernetic discourse might inform the debate and practice on sustainability. Minimally the issue is interdisciplinary. It is not about sustainability, nor is it about viability. It is rather about what do we mean by 'sustainability' in tackling the complex issues facing us in the modern world.

So, for anyone interested in understanding the relevance of cybernetics and systems thinking to the modern world, this will be a fascinating and invaluable meeting of minds and sharing of insights.

For practical reasons we have decided to do the event on the suggested dates (23rd-25th June).  In order to have a smooth planning and preparation, we’ll highly appreciate from those Metaphorum members and individuals interested in registering for the Syntegration, to send us their registration form within the next two weeks, or at least an email to the organisers expressing your interest to attend.

Looking forward to hear your responses regarding this years’ event.

Angela, Roger,  Stig,

Dispatches UK (Channel 4 ) blamed the secrecy of bankers on the current credit meltdown,

http://www.channel4.com/news/articles/dispatches/how+the+banks+bet+your+money/1563152

but Wikileaks seems to be still going. The Wikipedia on Wikileaks has a url

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikileaks

 in Links that appears functional.

Currently the site is available at

http://88.80.13.160//wiki/Wikileaks

The Swiss Bank offshore material (they brought the injunction) is still there and Wikileaks.org claim to be uncensorable seems to be under test.

Thanks Russell. Great stuff.

Best

There seems to be a big story in this little event for those who value openness and transparency (another sustainability theme related to good governance).

See: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/7250916.stm

"A controversial website that allows whistle-blowers to anonymously post government and corporate documents has been taken offline in the US.

Wikileaks.org, as it is known, was cut off from the internet following a California court ruling, the site says. . . "

Of particular interest are these comments which suggest another wider agenda: "As well as removing all records of the site form its servers, the hosting and domain name firm was ordered to produce "all prior or previous administrative and account records and data for the wikileaks.org domain name and account".

The order also demanded that details of the site's registrant, contacts, payment records and "IP addresses and associated data used by any person...who accessed the account for the domain name" to be handed over."

Is this the same democratic system that requires librarians to report to central government what books are borrowed? All a bit Chilli really.
