"The Green Man, symbolizing fertility and seasonal regeneration, is traced back through Roman times to the Celtic god Cernunnos. The Green Man was a favored figure used on the outside of churches, the outside in those days being reserved for the pre-Christian gods. Rituals dedicated to springtime regeneration associated with the Green Man have survived to modern times." (Didn't learn from my scholarly days - forgot to write down the reference!)
