Here's a Modern Irish translation of the passage, forwarded from
Sean O'Connor <[log in to unmask]>, agus ba mhaith liom buíochas
a ghlacadh leis.  - Dennis

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Beanchéile Cháier, bhí a hintinn greamaithe ar Néidiu gur thug sí, de ghrá
air, úll airgid dó.

Níor ghlac Néidiu uaithi é gur gheall sí an ríocht dó mar chomharba air,
agus é a dhul chuici [nó: í a dhul chuige] ina dhiaidh sin.

"Conas a tharlóidh sin?" arsa Néidiu.

"Ní deacair sin" arsa an bhean. "Cum aoir ag cur máchaile air. Iar sin, ní
bheidh fear na máchaile ina rí."

"Ní héasca dom a leithéid. Ní dhiúltódh mo dhuine aon rud dom. Níl rud ar
bith aige nach dtabharfadh sé dom."

"Is eol dom" arsa an bhean, "rud nach dtabharfaidh sé duit, sé sin, an scian
a tugadh dó i dtír na hAlban, (sin rud) nach dtabharfaidh sé duit. Is geas
dó gan scaradh leis."

D'iarr Néidiu an scian ar Cháier.

"Mo léan!" arsa Cáier, "Is geas dom gan scaradh leis."

Chum Néide cáineadh deighilte faoi, gur tháinig trí spuaic ar a ghrua.

Sí seo an aoir.
