List et al,
Had the opportunity to see Paddy Keenan and Sean Tyrell last night at
the Kuumbwa Jazz Center in Santa Cruz, CA. They were joined by Junji
Shirota (local San Francsico guitar genius), and Theo Paige (fiddle). It
is a small venue so I got to sit about 15 feet away from the stage and
got a great view of Paddy's playing. He was playing his Crowley full-set
with a Leo Rowsome chanter. I asked him if those were his Williams
regulators and he said they were the Crowley's and that David Williams
was working on his regs making specific modifications to the holes which
Paddy had requested.
Paddy, per usual, complained about his pipes and reeds, but honestly
folks, they sounded great! Paddy was quite the stand-up comedian as well
telling many jokes.
The combination of Paddy and Sean was really great. Each did a couple of
solo sets which were fantastic. Paddy played some incredibly fast
staccato triplets in one jig.
He also played a couple of very moving slow airs both on the pipes and
low D whistle.
All in all, a great evening!
