There are a number of well known piping personalities including
players and makers either directly subscribed or getting occasional
forwards from others.
A few who have chosen to contact me have said that any contribution
on their part generates too many inquiries etc. for them to handle.
Also many makers in a traditional craft don't want to share
hard-won, special knowledge about methods, sources etc. I take
a neutral position on this because certainly nobody owes any
of us an easy entry into direct competition with them. There's
a lot of history behind these feelings that can't be erased
at internet tempos.
I've demonstrated another way by publishing chanter and drone
design information that I'm using myself. Partly though this
is because internet participants helped me develop it, so I
owe the community more than some others do. At some point I'll
be making traditional pipes and I already feel the incentive
to be less than candid about every last detail.
