"Design and Implementation of a Security Aspect for OO Languages"

                                      at

                      OO Systems and Languages Group
                      Department of Computer Science
Ecole des mines de Nantes, Nantes, France

                                     and

                                 Projet MEIJE
Ecole des mines de Paris/INRIA, Sophia-Antipolis, France

Summary:
--------

Making distributed applications secure, in particular applications built
using the so-called mobile programming paradigm, is one of the
scientifically
most challenging and active research domain in the field of software
engineering. Moreover, security in information systems is a research
domain
having a large impact on commercial and industrial applications.
Currently,
research on and applications of security are characterized by a
multitude of
approaches, many of which are ad hoc, mutually incompatible and
operationally
defined. Consequently, security properties are difficult to understand,
enforce and/or verify.

The subject of this thesis is a security aspect separating the
declarative
definition of security properties for mobile programs from
object-oriented
programs. The following problems should be addressed:

  - Evaluation of security requirements in different application
contexts
(such as mobile computing, VPNs, reactive programming)
  - Design of a security aspect enabling the generic definition of
protocol-
and type-based security properties for object-oriented programming
    languages.
  - Development of a unifying formal basis and corresponding
implementation
techniques allowing the precise and sound definition of of the
security
    aspect.
  - Implementation of a prototype in Java.

The thesis includes a close cooperation with a Paris-based start-up
doing R&D
on secure Java applications and will be synchronized with a research
project
financed by the CNET (R&D division of France Telecom) at Ecole des mines
de
Nantes.

Potential candidates should have detailed knowledge in at least two of
the
following domains (and should be interested in some of the remaining
ones):

  - Object-Oriented Programming
  - Security in information systems
  - Distributed programming (mobile programming, in particular)
  - Formal methods (program semantics and analysis, in particular)
  - Java programming environment (language, JVM, APIs)
  - Implementation techniques
(program transformation and reflective programming, in particular)
