Getting back to the subject of typography (for a bit, at least) -- there is
a question that has been rattling around in my brain for a while.
I know that one of the important (and importanly lucrative) genres of early
books published (I believe) beginning in Italy in the early 1500's was, as
the Italians so aptly put it, "books meant to be read with one hand." I
also know that all the (few) samples of these kind of books I have seen
were set in Italic type. Was there some association between pornography and
italic type? Or was it just that these books first developed as a genre
around the time that Italic was in common use? Are there manuscript forms
of early pornography still extant? What did they look like?
