Hello ALL !!
I just received the message below from Dave Wilson.. I am forwarding
it to serve as an input to the 'Attachment or No Attachment' debate
Bye for now
I'm Dave Wilson, the administrator of LISTSERV.HEANET.IE. I've received
a couple of reports of viruses being mailed to the AFRIK-IT list. Having
looked at the archives, I see that you're aware of the situation and
handling it well. Many thanks.
I see that a couple of subscribers have requested that attachments be
stopped by the server. I don't know if this is explicitly possible using
LISTSERV but the recommended way is to place an upper limit on the number
of lines in a post using the Sizelim= parameter. Most posts have no more
than 100-200 lines; the worm post had 3,700. (Also, it's not unusal for
listowners to prefer that posters split up excessively long messages,
since they can lead to problems with older mail programs).
You might also like to set errant subscribers to NOPOST and/or NOMAIL,
or even unsubscribe them, until they can assure you that the virus has
been removed from their systems.
You can use these at your discretion. In case you're not aware, we
upgraded the version of LISTSERV a while ago so there might be some new
features you'd like to use that weren't around when AFRIK-IT was set up.
These are detailed at
and the updated manuals can be found at http://www.lsoft.com/manuals/1.8d/
Many thanks, and if there is anything I can do to help, please let me know.
