Thank you, yes! I get so bogged down in all Gil's rantings and ramblings I never seem to get the point of what he is actually saying (but I don't think I'm alone there).
I think I'd used the wrong word by using 'force' in my original posting; as you quite rightly said, it wasn't a military action but a sort of tide of change that swept across the continent. I'd never actually thought about how it happened so quickly. Were there aspects of particular places that allowed Christianity to take a firmer hold than in other places? And how did Ireland acquire Christianity before Patrick was there?
