I've heard up to 9600, with a claim of 14,400 with compression
(Motorola). But those claims are from manufacturers.

As would I! Most helpful would be someone who uses GSM only for
email, but a useful alternative test might be to attempt to send and
receive a text file of known size (e.g. 100kb), timing both the modem
handshaking and data transfer portions of the connection. We'd then
want to know the equipment used and both the ISP and cell phone
operator price structures.
