University of Plymouth Faculty of Science Department of Biological
Sciences

Temporary Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Marine Biology (Post
3213/SCI)

This is a fixed-term appointment for  one year from July 1
1999 to provide support for our marine biology degree programmes
during the secondment of one of our existing staff. The successful
candidate will be a marine biologist able to contribute to the
following areas: general marine biology and ecology, sub-littoral
ecology, marine conservation, and invertebrate biology. The
appointee will also be required to attend two residential field
courses covering aspects of marine diversity and ecology and to
conduct boat-based practical exercises.

Interviews will be held on 26 May 1999. Shortlisted candidates will
be invited for informal discussions, and will be interviewed
following a seminar presentation to members of  the Department. The
seminar (20 min + 5 min discussion) will be used as an assessment of
ability to present undergraduate lectures and should be presented
accordingly (further details will be provided to short-listed
candidates).

Summary of the Post
· fixed-term appointment for one year (subject to probationary
interviews)
 · available from July 1 1999 or as soon as possible
thereafter
 · appointment will be made at an appropriate point in the
Lecturer/Senior Lecturer scale in the range £18396 -£29600
· main teaching commitments in marine biology and ecology
· located on Plymouth campus
· you will be assigned a mentor to assist in integration into the
Department of Biological Sciences teaching programme
· all staff have the opportunity to participate in a wide-ranging
staff development programme
 · the Department will provide a supportive environment for your
academic and personal development
 · you will be encouraged to pursue personal scholarly activity and
research (within the time constraints of the temporary nature of this
post)

Responsibilities of the post

· operate as a member of a team of marine biologists in developing
and delivering teaching
 · teach and assess in modules in marine biology at all levels within
 B.Sc.(Hons.) programmes in Biological Sciences, Marine Biology and
Environmental Sciences
· act as a personal tutor and project supervisor for designated
students
· contribute to curriculum planning and development
 · contribute to the University’s quality assessment procedures
 · contribute toadministrative tasks within the Department of
Biological Sciences
 · participate in meetings of the Ecology and Marine Biology Division
and the Department of Biological Sciences
· carry out other suchduties commensurate with the post as may be
determined in consultation with the Head of Department of Biological
Sciences

Essential attributes for the post
· good honours degree in a biological subject with strong zoology component
· doctorate in a marine biological/zoological study area
· experience of teaching /demonstrating at degree level
· enthusiasm for team work and inter-disciplinary collaboration
· enthusiasm for fieldwork and ability to contribute to residential
field courses and boat-based activities

Desirable attributes for thepost

· ability to teach at all undergraduate levels in the following
areas: general marine biology and ecology, sub-littoral ecology,
marine conservation and invertebrate biology
 · experience in scholarly activity and research
· commitment to the involvement in new approaches to teaching and
learning in the light of changing circumstances in Higher Education
