Do you have any reason to suppose that it wasn't valid? Just FYI there
are a fair number of other Gaelic names that are Norse in origin, e.g.
MacLeod, O'Rourke, McCorquodale etc., due to the fact of Viking settlements
in Ireland and Scotland.
