Ahhh, I wasn't aware that Pterry had defined the numbering system to that
degree, and I also didn't realize that you were speaking in the British
fashion of numbering (should have checked your originating I.P. Duh.). By
your definition, it is a base 3 system, but I belive your naming is
incorrect. IIF (if and only if) I interpret your posts correctly the
numerical equivalent would be as follows:
Base three requires that there are 3 units (4 including zero) before
increment. In base 16, the sequence goes 1-9, 1A,-F then 10, 11, 12...
There must be a placekeeper value (zero), in order to increment. And they
have that, because they can define "NONE". So, I don't know what you would
call it, as far as what base (Base Troll, probably), but it wouldn't be
base 3, because it never increments. Of course, you could represent any
value simply by giving the component parts (LOTS, LOTS, LOTS, LOTS, many -
many's, one). But this brings a question of nomenclature. Would many lots
be 12 or 27? Order of naming is fairly advanced, and if trolls are bright
enough to derive rules of naming, why not implicit multiplication in the
naming process? If Trolls have addition, multiplication (otherwise, the
Troll race would be pretty short lived :) follows right along. Division
would come pretty easily to them (or would they call that cracking, or
fission, from the crack and fissure root words) I would think... Ahh, but
it's all semantics... Perhaps we should take this over to
