I'll stick my neck out and venture an opinion on this thread. I think we
have fallen into the trap of pigeonholing music: Classical is stuffy, rap
is obscene, Irtrad is wonderful, etc. I have played classical, jazz, and
Irtrad, and have gotten the same rush from playing expresively & creatively
in all three. Each has its own traditions, which are changing, as all
types of music are living. Even classical music, which probably has the
most "rules" of the different musical genres is not etched in stone.
Listen to a beginner play a simple melody vs a master: There is something
(soul?) that the musician must put intoi the playing for it to be music.
Otherwise our computer programs could play all music, and we would just be
programmers. (Am I opening up a nother war here?) all music has its
nerits, and all types have variety within them. Just because I do not like
to listen to country or rap doesn't make them bad, or not as "good" as what
I do choose to listen to.
It is a bit annoying for people to alwaya insist that clasical is stuffiy
and imprisoned, while folk (or whatever) is free. Irtrad can be suits, and
classical blue jeans & Hawaiian shirts (one concert I played in).
Stepping of of my soapbox...
