Thanks, Roland, for explaining about this tune as played on
the Kellys/Crehan/Gavin album.
All the tunes in CRE III are transcriptions from recordings.
The notes at the back of the book give the name of the
musician(s), followed by the album reference number and
track number. Then there's a separate list of musicians and
the tune numbers which they play; numbers with an asterisk
indicate that more than one musician was playing. Finally,
there's a list of the albums from which the tunes are taken.
In the case of "Dublin Porter", the text note says "Mi/chea/l
O/ Croidhea/in [Mick Crehan] et al., 36/A/7(a)". 36 is the
reference number for "Irish Traditional Music", and Mick
Crehan's is the first name listed. In the list of musicians,
Mick Crehan is credited as playing tunes 17, 155 and 194, and
these are marked with an asterisk. John Kelly, James Kelly
and Michael Gavin are also listed as playing these tunes.
Apparently, this is incorrect.
From what you say, Roland, it seems that the Kellys should
be credited with no.s 17, 155 and 194, and Mick Crehan and
Michael Gavin should share the credit for no. 194 with the
If anyone knows of any other inaccuracies in the credits in
CRE III, please let me know, on or off list. Thanks.
