A while back I asked the list if anyone knew of a good program that will
play a tune and show the notation at the same time. I found a few program demos
that will do this but there were always alot of problems with wierd file extensions,
the notation screen closing down when the next cued up tune started, not being
able to have the tune or tune list repeat easily, not being able to save notation
configurations etc...etc...etc... FRUSTRATION!!!
Anyway, as luck would have it I came by a program that is very cheap
and does pretty much everything I want it to do with respect to learing tunes from
midi and notation simultaneously (as well as editing the files...) It lets you play
songs one at a time or will scroll through a directory like a jukebox and still keeps
the notation screen up so you can follow the notes!!! This is what I was looking for.
It also lets you loop sections of the tune that are giving you trouble so that you can
learn them real quick. Lots of other good features for practising!
So...the program is called Power Tracks Pro Audio...and costs only $29
U.S. dollars!!! web page at : www.pgmusic.com (same makers as Band in a Box)
Kinda sounds like a plug but it's not - really. I've been looking a VERY
long time for a program that would do all it should do to make learing tunes as
simple and as fast as possible. Just wanted to share the info!
Only drawbacks from my perspective are the Windows 3.1 filing system
and the fact that 6/8 tunes have to be saved with a 3/4 signature in order to have
the notation displayed normally. Hopefully the next version will correct these
things. In the meantime I'll finally be practising in cyberspace!
