Part of it might be to do with his rather strange instrument --
a four-stringed Gibson Mandocello. It has a rather hybrid
banjo/bouzouki feel to it.
RE: Is he traditional/genuine/whatever? -- aw, for gawdsake!!
Whether he's trad or not is independent of being genuine.
But to answer - no he generally doesn't play reels 'n' jigs, etc.
But he does sing and play very well. If you like other Irish
singers/interpreters (e.g., Christy Moore, Andy Irvine, John
Spillane) there is a reasonable chance you'll like him.
