I meant to mention this before: the University of Limerick run
free lunchtime trad concerts every Thursday at 1:10pm. I'm just back
from this week's offering: Denis McMahon on fiddle and Paudie O'Connor
on box (both from around Killarney). Beautiful, beautiful music. I
haven't heard such tight duet playing in a while - every roll, cut,
triplet etc perfectly in sync. Jimmy Smith, a great dancer from Tralee,
danced 'The Blackbird' and later danced a few reels with a partner
(don't know who she was).
So far this term, there's been Mattie Joe Shéamais & Máiréad Ní Oistín,
Johnny McCarthy, Brendan Begley, Paddy & Cyril O'Donoghue and more.
There's only 2 more concerts left before Christmas: next week is
Siamsa Tíre and the following week will be Tara & Dermie Diamond (you can fly
into Shannon for that one, Thomas J.:-). Next term's musicians haven't
been announced yet. The college also run free seminars on Wednesday
afternoons - Tom Munnelly, Jackie Small, Nicholas Carolan and Terry
Moylan did one on the work of Breandán Breathnach and Lillis O
Laoire, Eibhlís Ní Shúilleabháin and Pádraig O Ceannabháin on the
sean-nós song tradition in Ireland.
So if anyone happens to be in Limerick of a Thursday, you now know
where to go for lunch,
