Recent discussions on the list of essential session tunes, tunes Mike Dugger
is using for his workshop, etc. have got me thinking about a related topic.
I'm trying to encourage some of the newer musicians around here, especially
those who are dependent on written music, to listen to more music (and read
less). We've had *those* discussions on this list several times, and I'm not
trying to initiate a discussion of learning by ear vs. written music.
My question comes from one I've been asked: "If I can only get a few
recordings, which ones do you recommend?" I'm looking for some help from the
list in making recommendations.
The criteria I think are important are (remember, these are people quite new
to this music):
Easily available (can be purchased locally)
"Accessible" (may not necessarily be "pure drop" but will engage the more
casual listener? (and lead to the hard stuff eventually))
Contains tunes that are fairly widely known and/or played
