What a great topic! My $.92 worth of questions. It is of note that they
mention the German or transverse flute by name, rather than just calling it a
flute. Could this mean that the older beak or direct flute was being used in
Also, it seems quite possible that the older Scottish tunes could have their
roots in an even older Irish tradition. As I remember my history the Irish
settle in Scotland very early. This data is from a very dated Compton
Encyclopedia(1950's) so new information could be available. I remember this
fact clearly because I would tease my Scot grandmother that she was really
Irish, and that it was documented. (SMILE)
The other path is to look at the Irish influence of the American southern
music. Do we know when that began. (We means someone else not me).
Another factor is to look at the development of the instruments, and note if
any early Roman historian mentioned the music and possible what type of
instruments were used. If our forefolks(you like that word) the Celts were
already using some type of flute, tin whistle or bag pipe this would be useful
to know. It is unlikely that they would give up their tunes.Tthe music has its
very own sanity and comfort.
Also, by studying the perceived routes of the Celts, looking at modern day
folk music in this area, and seeing/hearing the similarities and the
differences. Including in this study could not only be tha actual music but
also the instruments, for instance, the frame drum.. This can be dangerous
ground because we do not want too much speculation. Looking for solid
Another clue might be in the language itself. In Irish what words are use
for different musically instruments. Do we know in the Old Irish which words
would be used to describe these same instruments? Is there a difference? As
I am sure many folks know, often times a culture will incorporate or be
influenced by the originating lang of something, an example would be the
American word, telephone. This can be a clue as to the instruments general
wide use acceptance into a culture.
Having said all that it seems to me like a huge project to answer these
questions.(Oh my guilt is showing).
However, I did not say my$.02 worth. I realized I am being a piggy inquistive
mind. Many list member know some of these answers, or know how to access this
information fairly easily;or(smile) are or know some gifted scholars that are
bored on their computers. I am more than willing to help find the information
but I am not a steady net surfer, and have a compute with 2400 bd modem. So
my capability to research these questions in a timely manner is limited but
Thanks for reading such a lengthy e-mail.
Hope all is(s)well (note s is optional) Do you like that Janice? (Smile)
