Ghost D is a note which is unique for the uilleann pipes. It's
achieved by raising the little finger of the right hand from the
chanter. You then get an eirie tone which is neither D or Eb.
I've started using it as it gives a weird feedback sort of tone
just before playing a high d for ex. It can be used of course
before leading into other notes. Usually one lifts both the
little and ring finger of the right hand from the chanter to
sound an E note. To get the ghost D one lifts just the
little finger. I use it sometimes instead of the normal D
which is achieved by lifting the chanter bell off the thigh.
gives a nice ghostly effect. Sometimes I frighten myself
badly when doing this.
There is no swelling of the reeds? and no bag or bellows
techniques are used to achieve this ghost D. It has nothing
to do with the drones or regulators. It's easily achieved if you
have a decent chanter and reed. just raise the little finger and
