Everyone has been wonder why there are so many different Julia Clifford's
polkas so naturally I have to tell the story(smile), As Jim C. was saying
Julia lived in England for many years. One of her saddest lonesome moments
was not being there for the Christmas holidays. She had not been to Ireland
in a number of years, and she was definately planning a Christmas trip. Her
ticket was paid and she was to leave the next day. That night her husband
became very ill and she knew she could not go. She stayed awake two night
nursing him and making sure he was on the mend. She was very tired from the
The next day her family called her at Christmas, at first, she was strong and
sounded content. She went to talk to her brother Denis and she burst into
tears. Her poor brother Denis felt her pain and carried it. The next night he
was at one of the local pubs with many of his and Julia's musical friends.
The friends were visiting relatives too;and kept asking Denis about Julia.
Finally, he told them about her unhappiness about missing the holiday and
missing the opportunity of playing tunes with all of them again.
Each musical fellow heard the tale and the subject was quickly changed.
However, in each of their unspoken hearts they decided to do something for
Julia. They knew her love of polkas so they EACH decided to name THEIR
favorite polka tune after her. People being who they are each had their own
favorite. So they honored her, and kept deep in their hearts the spirit of her
playing with them. Thus, many a polka tune has been given the rightful name of
Julia Clifford's Polka.
A mystery always needs a story, don"t you think? Please do not get confused by
facts. wink and a grin
