Hi all ....
Went to see Maire Breathnach and her new band, Cluaisling, last night here in Dublin.
Maire on fiddle, viola and keyboards, Keith Donald, ex Moving Hearts, on saxophone,
Niall O'Callanain on bouzouki, and unknown percussionist and double-bassist.
There's been some talk lately about saxophones and I must say I really enjoyed Keiths
playing last night. Fiddle and Saxophone blended very well for all of the tunes.
Most of these, I think, were Maires compositions or arrangements - a set of slides
called "Hop, Skip, and Jump", and a tune called "Mystic Slip Jig" were included.
I was very impressed at the new venue also. "Vicar St", - it's on Thomas St just
around the corner from where I live. Easily recognisable 'cos of the large carved
wooden heads mounted on poles just outside it. ( Word is that these have been
christened "The Pricks on the Sticks" as would be expected here in Dublin ). The
venue itself consists of a *very* wide stage and a not-so-deep auditorium. Sound is
very good and it's quite comfortable also. Expect to pay a couple of bob extra
Ronnie Drew made a guest appearance. Good night had by all.
( Interestingly enough, a small group of people at the back started to clap during
one of the tunes. They gave up 10 seconds later when no-one joined in. )
Maire also made a guest apearance for flute player Conor Byrne in Whelans on Monday
night. Another good night. Conor was joined again by Niall O'Callanain and, for the
last time for now, the Leitrim fiddler Tom Morrow. Tom Morrow will shortly start
touring with Dervish.
