There are no rules, except good taste and musicality. If it works, it works.
Changing scales and modes can be very effective, it can also sound weird
depending on which tunes are involved or how you work out the transition.
Also, I know some musicians who tend to believe that it's a cheap trick, and
who would rather play a whole series of tunes in the same key or mode to
show that the character of each individual tune is enough to sustain interest.
