I have posted on this subject in the past, so you can look it up in the
list's archives. Here's a quick 'n' dirty recipe:
If it's major (with a leading tone), it's major (duh...) (mode 1).
If it sounds minor, it's Dorian (mode 2) or less often Aeolian (mode 6).
If it sounds like major but not quite, with that low 7th note, it's
Mixolydian (mode 5).
