In the case of my grandfather, he was given a choice by the Brits: either be
hung in Ireland or emigrate to the USA. That was in 1920. I've talked to
other Irish-Americans whose grandfathers were "invited" out of Ireland at about
the same time. Lovely people, these Brits.

I thought they were immigants!
I thought Australia had the bulk of the penal settlements.
Or was it we just picked up the political dissidents and petty thieves,
while the Americas picked up the troblemakers and thus future leaders?
