Re" idn Website
It took me over a minute on my 64K line in Joburg this am. Not great but not
A ping revealed a number of time-outs which indicate packet delays even within
the US, which result in their timing out on the way here. My ping to
www.netscape.com was nearly 30% quicker (averaged) - implying that our
international link is not entirely to blame.
Another problem is that I can only see any of the www.idn.org site on Netscape
4, once is it is almost fully loaded (maybe due to the large sized table). Place
lines of text strategically for early download. Add some important text at the
beginning (especially links, if it's a home page) and have gifs downloading at
the end. Have re lo-res gif shadows before the actual gifs. This allows
constructive browsing to commence while you wait. Changing front-page gif's
less seldom and repeating them on other pages, allows the cache to quickly fill
in. Having more, smaller gifs is wise so that every time you go back to a page,
it can resume downloading a few more gifs whic were interrupted the last time
you hit a link early.
Would IDRC folk mind if I invited a **constructive** test of our home page -
www.idrc.ca which should have some of the above ideas purposely built in. We
had a thinktank working on some ideas and we have had review comments
from ultra-low bandwidth users - but we don't think North American partners feel
the quality has in any way been compromised.
