FYU - Just in from the Belfast Telegraph:
Thursday April 23
Celtic cross may move indoors -
THE Loughshore area of Tyrone may lose it most famous landmark within
the next few years.
The weather has finally taken its toll on the eleventh century celtic
cross at Ardboe on the shores of Lough Neagh and the Department of the
Environment feels it can only be preserved by taking it indoors.
The department has informed Cookstown District Council that because of
the weather-beaten condition of the cross, the monument will have to be
moved to an indoor site within two years.
They have promised however that there will be full local consultation
regarding the cross which has been in state care since 1912.
The future of the adjacent Old Cross cemetery and its monastic ruins
dating back to the sixth century are also under discussion .
