Information Technologies and Social Development
Salle XVI, Palais des Nations, Geneva, 22-23 June 1998 International
conference organized by United Nations Research Institute for Social
Development (UNRISD)
On 22 and 23 June 1998 the United Nations Research Institute for
Social Development (UNRISD) will sponsor an international conference
on "Information Technologies and Social Development." The purpose of
the event is to consider how new information technologies are likely
to affect trends toward polarization and marginality (among countries
and within them), and how these new technologies can create
possibilities to protect livelihoods and defend human rights,
particularly in developing and transitional countries. The conference
will promote discussion of concrete case studies, as well as broader
debate on patterns of global structural change. Participants will be
drawn from multilateral and bilateral agencies, the computer and
telecommunications industry, NGOs, CBOs and academia.
