Hi Daaim Shabazz
Your list of famous statements is all so amusing.
Information Technology is one of the areas where this type of thinking
has actually caused problems. Take the YK2 (year 2000) problem for
instance. We all know just how vast this is. Further we also know
the repercussions of doing nothing about it. In fact I dont think there
is any IT person not concerned about this problem. Naturally there are
those exceptional people who planned well and dont have this so called
An example I can remember here in South Africa is, it was never
anticipated in some payroll systems that an individual could earn in
excess of one thousand rands! Now everbody (in IT at least) earns well
in excess of that. Obviously some maintenance programmer had to make the
necessary change after some irate staff member discovered he had a
thousand rand less !
It would be interesting to hear from other people about computer systems
which were designed with little regard for the future.
