I don't think anyone can unambiguously claim ownership of the
idea, just the premiere execution.
Does anybody know of even older examples of this, meaning
outline fonts designed to match the bitmaps (at least in basic
proportions: width, x-height, existence of serifs)?
These types of fonts are very useful in one aspect: you can
predict the font's behavior on paper by what you see on screen.
