Good question. As most traditional serif faces were developed as book
faces, they seem not to translate well into heavier weights. Even many of
the late 20th Cent. versions of them have the same problem. When bold type
was needed, sans serifs were invented. The happy result for us is that bold
sans serifs and lighter serifs contrast/complement each other so well.
