Happy Ethiopian new year,
Dear Dan and others,
Here in Ethiopia, I think the advantages of INTERNET connectivity seems
to be well understood by a number of decision makers. The main problem
is a question of resources. For example in Addis Ababa it is said there
are more than 500,000 people in the waiting list to just get telephone
connections which is probably a neccessary condition for INTERNET. It is
not an easy job.
As for the coordination and development of the INTERNET, the Ethiopian
INTERNET service is doing a good job. For example very soon there will
be I think 5 centers open to the public where you can send and receive
emails, or if you like surf on the net at a very affordable price.
Anybody interested in knowing more about what is happening at the
INTERNET could ask the guys at the INTERNET.
I seem to be advertising for them but I have been following the
developments very closely and they have come a long way. When I came
back from the UK about 18 months ago, I brought with me some books on
unix and a linux software. The linux was installed in a private company
where the guys from INTERNET where trained for just two weeks and now
they are running their system satisfactorily.
