ICT-4-LED <http://ccen.uccb.ns.ca/ict4led> (after 4/9/97).

A Workshop and a Cape Breton Island Cultural Experience

Thursday, October 16th -- Saturday October 18th, 1997

The Centre for Community and Enterprise Networking (C\CEN),
<http://ccen.uccb.ns.ca> of the University College of Cape Breton is
sponsoring a two day and one-half day workshop on the current status and
future prospects of using Information and Communications Technology for
Local Economic Development.

Cape Breton and elsewhere in Nova Scotia are widely acknowledged as
being international leaders in the community applications of ICT and the
use of ICT to support local economic development. The Cape Breton
experience, along with examples from the rest of Nova Scotia and
underdeveloped regions in both developed and developing countries will be
examined.

The Workshop is being held at the same time as "Celtic Colours" a
major international festivel of Celtic music, which will
be bringing together Canadian and International artists
and performers in settings throughout the glorious autumn foliage
of Cape Breton Island. A few of these Celtic Musicians include Ashley
MacIsaac, The Barra MacNeils, John Allan Cameron, Mary Jane Lamond, and
Capercaillie Opportunity will be made and assistance provided for
Workshop participants to take full advantage of the final events of the
festival.

C\CEN is a Research, Development & Enterprise Incubation group at
the University College of Cape Breton in Sydney, Nova Scotia,
Canada. Our staff work on community-based projects and new business
ideas that use Information & Communication Technology -- especially
the Internet -- for local economic development.

The Workshop will:

o Examine how community access to the Internet can help
non-metropolitan areas become full and equal participants in the
global information economy.

o Look at the linkages between Community Economic Development, Local
Economic Development and ICT especially in the context of the deep
historical roots of CED in Cape Breton

o Provide an introduction to the work of C\CEN in linking ICT to LED

o Present for discussion and analysis case studies of ICT and LED
including the local experience with telecentre's/community access sites,
music and other local cultural resources and ICT/LED (the experience with
Cape Breton Music on-line), and ICT and local business incubation

o Discuss the role of government and the private sector as a market
in supporting ICT and LED

o Review the possible linkages between ICT and LED in developed
countries and developing countries

o Examine the opportunities for on-going sustainability of rural
community access sites

o Other topics as they develop...

The Workshop will be limited to 50 participants and will be of
particular interest to ICT and LED practitioners, planners, and
policy makers. Registration will be C$250 with scholarships
available on request. The registration fee of $250.00 does not
include accommodations.

Resource persons for the Workshop will be Dr. Michael Gurstein, Director
of C\CEN, Dr. Bruce Dienes Co-ordinator of Wire Nova Scotia, and other
Nova Scotia and International practictioners to be announced shortly.
