I'm off on another journey, this time to a number of East African
corners, with an unfortunate but unavoidable side trip to Botswana
and perhaps even Namibia. I'm happy to visit those countries,
especially Namibia where it will be my first visit ever. I say
"unfortunate" only because I hate cross-continental flights -- the
ones across the Atlantic and down from Europe are bad enough. Though
I must say the Kenyan Airways flights are quite pleasant, with very
friendly service and good food.
A West African trip is tentatively scheduled for November.
Here's the itinerary for this next trip:
8/30-9/7 Arusha and vicinity
If I make the stop in Windhoek, it would be from 9/20 until 9/22,
round trip from Gaborone via Jo'burg.
The principal purpose of this trip in East Africa is to visit sites
(ag research institutes, offices) that have been aided in some way by
AfricaLink, to talk to staff about their experiences with the
program, discuss ways it might be improved, and explore potential new
areas of activity. Michael Hailu of ICRAF will be choosing the sites
for me to visit, since ICRAF is the primary implementing agency for
our work in East Africa. I suspect many if not all the sites visited
will be those mentioned in ICRAF's AfricaLink reports, housed on the
web for your viewing pleasure at
following the links to Regions, Africa, AfricaLink, and Reports.
The side trip to Southern Africa is to participate in one and
possibly two USAID planning meetings where they will be deciding
parts of their strategies for Internet related activities for the
As always on these trips, I would welcome the opportunity to meet
informally with individuals knowlegeable about the Internet to chat
about mutual interests, local developments, and so forth, or simply
to talk about the AfricaLink program.
