Tom Willis wrote a message in which he, once again, declared that
Catholicism is inherently superior to (at least) most other Christian
faiths. It included such propagandist statements like
"Another point of view is to look at the authority of the person who
founded each church. The Catholic Church was founded by Jesus. The
Presbyterian Church was founded by John Calvin ..."
"The Catholic Church teaches christianity which is consistent with the
early Church, and remarkably unchanged."
and various other statements in the same direction.
Bette's countered that with a statement, being aimed directly at this
superiority propaganda of Tom, and asked to take such propaganda
To this, Moira, made the following interesting response, which I
cannot leave unchallenged.
> When Tom writes about Christianity, one of the bigots on the List and say,
> don't talk about Christianity, it is not relevant to Celts.
Wrong. At worst a few on this list, but definitly not those whom you call
bigots, will argue that Christianity is not relevant to the Celts. Of
course, everybody is welcome to discuss Christianity as it influenced
and shaped Celtic culture and the Celts on this list. This is very
appropriate to the list.
> Although I am not a Christian, Catholicism was my Irish ancestors' very
> being. It is extremely relevant to the List.
Right. It is very relevant. But
> I don't see why some people are so anti-Christian. Let's be tolerant of *
> ALL* religions, and beliefs.
the tolerance you propose is something that everybody in such a
discussion has to show, or it becomes simply a method of opression
against some. Tom, in his message, did not show the slightest
willingness to be tolerant even against other interpretations of the
christian faith. He declared it a dogmatic fact that Catholicism is
the only valid form of Christianity.
One cannot expect tolerance as long as oneself isn't tolerant to
others. Treat others like you want to be treated yourself.
> Don't try to abort Tom's right to free speech, out of anti-Christian bigotry.
To make my point, no one is trying to abort Tom's right to free
speech. All Bette has done is using her right of free speech, which
you want to restrict obviously, to ask Tom to take his superiority
propaganda offlist. And, in fact, it is not relevant to the list if
Catholicism is superior to Protestantism or any other Christian
faith, as this is not Christian Dogma-L. Some Celts chose the
Catholic path for their life, others another.
As long as Tom plays by the rules, he is welcome to discuss
Christianity. The rules say there has to be a Celtic connection.
But only because some Celts were Christian this doesn't make
every debate about Christianity a valid theme for this list. As such,
it is not appropriate to discuss the sexual moral of some current
Catholic bishops in Austria, only because they are Catholics. And as
such, it is similarily not appropriate to discuss the theological
question if Catholicism is superior to other Christian faiths or not,
as this matter has no connection to the Celts or their culture at
