The US Merchant Marine Academy is trying to locate any surviving relatives
of WIlliam Bernard (Bill) Ginnelly who was killed in 1942 when his vessel the
Panamanian flagged Scapa Flow was hit by two torpedos and sank in 45 seconds.
They are holding a plaque of appreciation and wish to award it to any of
Cadet Ginnelly's family if they can be found.
Ginnelly was born 8 October 1922 to John and Nora Ginnelly of Our Lady of
Holy Souls Parish in Philadelphia Pa. Upon graduation from Simon Gratz Hs in
1942 he immediately entered the Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point NY.
He had three sisters Norah Lovell, born April 1914; Anna, born September
and Catherine, born in March 1911.
It is known that Catherine married William McGinnis at Our Lady of Holy
Souls in November of 1933.
