If you want to know the history of Wales, I think you would find enough
information to start with from your local library. If, however, I am
reading you correctly, what you really want is to be able to identify
with the part of yourself that is Welsh. This is an important and
necessary voyage of self-discovery and you might be surprised at what
I am going to check up to make sure I get the title and author
absolutely correct and will mail you the name of the very best book I
have ever read about the Welsh. The author is half English, half Welsh
and has more insight into the psyche of a whole nation than I have ever
seen in print before.
The Welsh (I am going to generalise again, Bruce - just warning you!)
are a subtle people and not what they appear on the surface. You may
find, on reading this book, that what you thought were odd things about
yourself are, in fact, part of your racial heritage. I recommend that
you look up Owain Glyndwr (spelled Owen Glendower in English) in the
meantime because the format of the book is based on his life. He was a
Welsh patriot who led a rising against the English and for a short time
achieved an independent Wales.
By the way, you might be interested to know that "Welsh" is an
Anglo-Saxon word that means "foreigner" and that the "Welsh" call their
land "Cymru" which means something like "the fellowship of the tribe".
I would much prefer to refer to "Cymru". Unfortunately not many people
will know what you mean when you use this word so I find myself being
totally inconsistent with it and using "Welsh" for convenience, although
I do think it the height of irony that the original inhabitants should
have to refer to themselves as "foreigners" in their own land.
The language your grandfather would have been speaking is Cymraeg
(Welsh). There is a course on the net but it wouldn't be easy to start
from scratch if you have no-one to practise with, still, you might want
to look it up. The address is
Here is another address you might like to have with lots of links to
