OK, I swear to try avoiding controversy as much as possible here.
Nonetheless, can anyone explain to me just what the deal is with
the rules for the Ceili Band competition?
A friend of mine went to Chicago with the "Quaking Bog Ceili Band"
(named for a unique geological feature in the Minneapolis area).
He told me that among other rules, whistle players in these bands
are restricted to the use of cylindrical-bore whistles without
thumbholes. The whistles must be made of metal. Also, most
curiously, while mandolins are permitted, guitars are not.
The amazing Daithi Sproule, who accompanied the Quaking Bog,
played mandolin on this occasion.
Can anyone explain what the philosophy is here? Or was my friend
just pulling my leg about this?
