On a television program on C-SPAN prior to the election, an excerpt
was played from one of Major's campaign speeches in which he talked about
Labour's proposals for a Welsh assembly and a Scottish Parliament. He
said something to the effect, "I don't know who they hate more -- the Welsh
because they won't give them legislative power, or the Scots because they
will give them legislative power." He went on to say these actions would
lead the U.K. onto the slippery slope of disunion and predicted the above-
mentioned disaster as the only possible outcome.
