> Standard management pap. Can Guinness Lite be far behind?
It has already been tried. Guinness spent millions on
an advertising campaign in the late 70s on 'Guinness Light'
with the catch phrase ' they said it couldn't be done' with
pictures of men walking on the moon and theme music from
2001 (Also Sprach Zarathustra).
They were right. It couldn't be done, at least at that time.
I was involved in the testing - I was a student at UCD at the time
(lots of new beers were tested on students). They came into
our bar and gave us free G light for the night. Being students,
we would drink anything with alcohol so we were the perfect
guinea pigs (pig being the appropriate word here), though hardly
connoisseurs of beer.
It tasted like Smithwicks but looked like Guinness
- it was light in the sense of not being as heavy as Guinness, the
alcohol content was the same. It must be the major flop of the
20th century in Irish marketing.
