Update on the ESS Telecom97 conference on Distance Learning.
We thank all the people who have accepted our invitation to present a
paper (The titles of their papers are not definitive yet; a few more are
ESS Telecom97 - Distance Learning A Bridge to the Future.

-John Schoneboom with the American Association for the Advancement of
Science-Sub-Sahara program - his paper will present the AAAS views on
Distance Learning in Africa
-Dr. Abebe Kebede with North Carolina A&T State University- his
paper(co-authored with M. Worku, D. Alamineh and B. Teklehaimanot) will
introduce the Ethiopian Distance Learning Association and their proposal
for an Open College
-Clement Dzidonu/Zimbabwe--will present a paper which will deal with
Distance Learning in Zimbabwe
-Dr. Alan Ginsberg with Bell labs Multimedia Communications will present
the latest on "Persyst", a distance learning system
-Teodros Lemma with WorldSpace Corp. will present a paper on the use
of digital radio broadcasting for Distance Learning in developing
-Dr. Tarekegn Guebre Yesus with Addis Ababa University will review the
World Bank's African Virtual University concept.
-C. Sade Turnipseed with Universal Media Exchange will present a paper
on Distance Learning opportunities in Uganda

-Arlene Krebs, President, New Orbit Communications (Author, "The Distance
Learning Funding $ourcebook") and a renowned expert on funding resources -
her paper will be on funding resources for Distance Learning projects
3. TELECOMMUNICATIONS, INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY AND DEVELOPMENT

-Mike Damena with COMSAT will present a paper on Managing the
development of telecommnications in Ethiopia
-Paul Birmingham with the World Bank's department of Telecom Operational
Support in Africa will present a paper related to aspects of
telecommunications in Africa
-Yeheyies T. Selassie will present a paper on developing telecommunications
-Linda Leonard with the US State Department's Lealand Initiative will giv
e an update on the Initiative
4. TECHONOLOGY UPDATE AS IT RELATES TO TELECOMMUNICATIONS AND
NETWORKING IN AFRICA (editor [log in to unmask])
- Mark Holtzer with National Instruments, a leader in virtual
instrumentation and the use of instruments at a distance over the Net
- Cu-Seeme, a teleconferencing and distance Learning tool-Whitepines Corp.
- Finally, if time permits, a trip to the IBM's Institute for Electronic
goverment, where state of the art Distance Learning tools are being used(a
few blocks from the World Bank building) is envisaged.
As mentioned in earlier updates, the conference room will seat 80 people only.
There are a few remaining. Registration applications are coming from as far
as Kenya, Ireland and Switzerland.
Everyone is invited to come and participate in this unique forum, organized
by Africans, where ideas that will define the future of learning in Africa
will be discussed; their strength and weaknesses highlighted.
