Ah Maputo. After a grueling all-nighter on KLM to Jo'burg, plus a
struggle to stay awake during the four-hour layover, I took an
air-tour via LAM airlines to Beira and Maputo. Pleasant flight.
A porter at the airport was able to tell me in Portuguese with
accompanying hand signals that my bags were waiting for me in the
international arrivals hall instead of the domestic where I'd
wandered by mistake. Immigration formalities took precisely two
seconds. The customs officer rummaged through my bags for a few
quick seconds more. The porter introduced me to an English speaking
taxi driver who drove me to my hotel. Was $15 too much to pay from
the airport to the Polana? I dunno -- first trip to Mozambique.
The Polana Hotel is something. The view of the ocean is just
spectacular. Nice setting for a meeting of the steering committee of
root-crops researchers in Southern Africa.
This email comes to you via the local line to SITA, connected at
9600bps. In the connection prior to the one used to send this
message, I downloaded 83 email messages from igc.apc.org in 30
minutes, at a cost of about $7. There was also a nominal hotel
charge for the local call.
I'd say the messages averaged about 1k each. That would make the
effective download to be about 370bps, yes? There seemed to be quite
long delays between each message, slowing the effective throughput.
(Whither the efficiency of Fido???) ;*)
