Bha caraid dhomh a' faighneachd dhiom de\ a' Gha\idhlig a tha air "hectic"
mar ann an "I've had a hectic time".
A-nise, is aithne dhomh gu bheil "fiabhrasach" is "e\itigeach" aig Ruaraidh
MacTho\mais air an fhacal seo, ach tha du\il agam gur ann air an t-sean
che\ill den fhacal a bha e a' smaoineachadh nuair a chuir e seo anns an
fhaclair aige. Tha e coltach gun robh (no gu bheil fhathast, 's do\cha) a'
chiall "feverish" no "consumptive" aig an fhacail "hectic" ach am faodamaid
"Bha u\ine fhiabhrasach agam" a ra\dh? De\ ur beachd?
A friend of mine was asking me what the Gaelic is for "hectic" as in "I've
had a hectic time".
Now, I know that Derrick Thomson has "fiabhrasach" and "e\itigeach" for
this word, but I suppose he was thinking of the old sense of the word when
he put this in his dictionary. It appears that the word "hectic" had (or
still has perhaps) the meaning "feverish" or "consumptive" but can we say
"Bha u\ine fhiabhrasach agam" ? What do you think?
