As I recall (and I'm willing to admit that my memory may need correcting)
there had been Inuit/Eskimo in Greenland at some time before the Norse
settlement, but not at the time when Erik and his followers arrived. The
Inuit later returned, to survive in Greenland to the present, while nothing
was ever heard of the Norse communities after the fourteenth century.
